Soccer

The Vasco da Gama Soccer Teams have a proud, successful and long history under the continued direction, and support of the Bridgeport Vasco da Gama Portuguese Cultural and Civic Center. The Team started in the early 1940’s and was entirely comprised of Club members who wanted an opportunity to continue to play soccer as they did in the “Old Country.” The Team participated in the “Connecticut Soccer League,” playing their home games at the public fields of Beardsley and Seaside Parks in Bridgeport.

In the early 1970’s, as the local Portuguese population and Club grew, the team still mostly comprised of club members became more competitive as one of the best teams in the league and winning the league championship more often than not. With the success on the field came more interest not only from Club members and their families, but the entire greater Bridgeport area.  It was not uncommon to have 2,000 fans at some games. Once when playing a friendly game against the Lisbon professional team “Sporting," the attendance reached 8,000 at Kennedy Stadium. Vasco's at this time was considered one of the best soccer teams in the country, since the professional league (NASL) was just developing. In fact the team managed to get to the final of the US Open Cup, the most prestigious US soccer trophy at that time, playing the game in Giants Stadium before 40,000 fans.
